in return boehner will demand something in return. that has got to be serious spending cuts and serious entitlement reform. so far the president has not given very much. although i will say when i talked to tim geithner, treasury secretary last week on "fox news sunday", he seemed to be inviting the republicans to do it, in effect saying look we'll not sit there did it ourselves. we can't make your demand for you. you should two demand it. of course there is some politics in that because it is a little difficult to say, yeah we want to raise retirement age for medicare or we want to cut or limit the social security cost of living adjustment. but i think the democrats will say, republicans you have to demand it but we'll give it to you if you demand it. martha: seems there are two levels of the political reaction to all of this. you've got the moment when a deal is reachesed, okay? you have what happens to the economy, six, seven, eight months down the road. if indeed you allow taxes to go up on all 100% and it starts to hit businesses

doing what boehner, tip o'neill and ronald reagan did? this political trophy you want rising rates runs the government for left len days when. it cops to debt ceiling time, mr. president, you will have a republican party make sure we save medicare and social security from bumps and save this country from becoming greece. one of his proposals we should never have any congressional check and balance raising the debt ceiling. he got elected president, not king. he is not king. he is president. martha: are you saying that republicans are willing to go to 39.6% back to that rate but the place where they will hold the line is on the debt ceiling issue. >> rates go up no matter what we do. there needs to be revenue component of any big deal. i think capping deductions is better than raising rates. there will come a day in february and march where we have to raise the debt ceiling by trillions of dollars. we're 16 trillion in debt. is it responsible to keep borrowing money and never address why you're in debt to begin with. long-term debt is baby

john boehner should say we passed this out of the house. let's see harry reid and the democrats pass this out of the senate. bill: i get the impression both sides are miles apart from the deal. and i'm told by smart people i'm dead wrong on that. are you of mind a or mind b, rich? >> i don't think there is a deal sitting there. i think they would have to sit down and negotiate it. bill: kirsten before you address rich's answer, are you in camp "a" or "b." >> they don't have a deal. how can you have a deal when you don't have the republicans making a counter offer. they keep saying where is the serious offer, they want more in terms of cuts. but they haven't really made a counter offer. i find this stuff that the republicans are saying is being counter productive. we are flabbergasted, we laughed eight. what is the point of that. make a counter offer. >> i think they would argue the tax revenues was their counter offer. bill: republicans are saying this was a democratic wish list, not a serious offer. one second. tim geithner from sunday. >>
